“We know philanthropy cannot replace the scale of federal and state programs,” Lynn Cheney, UWCM vice president of communications, said in the release. “But doing nothing is not an option. We’re grateful for those who’ve already stepped up, and this fund ensures we act quickly, effectively, and together when crisis strikes.”

The city announced on Thursday that it will allocate $250,000 to United Way of Central Massachusetts' United Response Fund, which will be used to provide food and heating assistance to residents.

The Esler Family Foundation’s donation brings its total contribution to the United Response Fund up to $200,000, after an initial investment of $100,000 the foundation made last month, according to a press release issued by UWCM on Monday.

“This fund is about building community,” Garvin said. “The three words I used are: helping, healing, and putting hope back into our lives.”
