John Merrill, Sovereign Bank

John Merrill chaired the 2006 Annual Campaign and was tireless in his efforts on behalf of the United Way. John’s distinguished leadership allows UWCM, for the second year in a row, to invest more money in programs benefiting children, youth, and people most in need. His visible role gave him the opportunity to tell his personal story to both CEOs and line workers alike. John’s father, Jack, grew up in Main South neighborhood of Worcester. The family faced challenges that left young Jack with little or no adult supervision. Fortunately, the Boys Club provided him with a safe, nurturing environment. Jack, who became an art teacher in the Worcester Public Schools, would be proud of the leadership and generosity shown by John, both personally and professionally.
