United Way Announces Free Tax Preparation

United Way of Central Massachusetts, part of the Worcester Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) Coalition, is excited to announce that the 2015 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites are scheduled to open starting at the end of January (site list and details below). The VITA sites provide low- to middle- income working families in central Massachusetts with free tax preparation assistance.

The EITC is a federal tax refund for eligible working individuals and households. Through the EITC Coalition, United Way of Central Massachusetts is making this tax credit more accessible to those who need it most. Workers who qualify for the EITC and file an income tax return can receive a refund, even if they had no income tax liability for the given year.

United Way’s involvement in the Worcester EITC Coalition supports the Family Stability goal to reduce the child poverty rate in central Massachusetts by 10% by 2020. Each year, the EITC lifts more families out of poverty than any other federal aid program, providing families an opportunity to increase savings, reduce debt, and finance education or training programs. The EITC credits that go unclaimed by low-income workers represent millions of dollars of lost revenue that would otherwise boost local economies. Last year, the Worcester EITC processed more than 1,800 tax returns for free and returned nearly $3 million to low- and moderate-income families in central Massachusetts.

United Way of Central Massachusetts connects people and resources to improve the community by focusing on the building blocks for a good life: Education, Family Stability, and Health. EITC sponsors include Bank of America and Internal Revenue Service. The Worcester EITC Coalition partners include: AllCom Credit Union, Assumption College, City Manager’s Office of Economic Development, The Community Builders/Plumley Village, FDIC, Internal Revenue Service, Main South CDC, Quinsigamond Community College, Unum, United Way of Central Massachusetts, WCCA TV-13, Worcester Community Action Council Inc, and Worcester State University.
