African Community Education (ACE)

Express Yourself Mentoring Program

Volunteer Opportunity Description: This is a group mentoring model to provide culturally competent social-emotional support and life skills to African refugee and immigrant girls ages 10-14.

Mentors meet once per week with a mentee for 90 minute session at ACE, 24 Chatham Street, Worcester. Mentor-mentee matches work on goal-building exercises, learn about community resources, play games, do craft projects, and spend time talking and building a relationship.

Once a month, all ACE mentor-mentee matches get together for a group field trip to a community resource. Mentors are matched with a mentee based on the following considerations: age, gender, ethnicity, similarity in background or shared experiences, and complementary interests and personalities.

Mentors must make a one year commitment, and are supported in their role by the ACE Mentoring Coordinator and by the Mentoring Assistant.

Leadership Academy Mentoring Program

Volunteer Opportunity Description: The Girls Inc. Leadership Academy is a gender-specific leadership program for 15-20 high school girls from Worcester Public Schools. Each session is led by a volunteer coach (with staff support) and focuses on one or two specific leadership skills. This program encourages and inspires girls to challenge themselves and gives them amazing opportunities to learn, grow, and be an effective part of our community.

Volunteer coaches participate in one Leadership Academy team consisting of 12-15 professional women from many different types of organizations. Using Girls Inc. curriculum, each coach has the opportunity to lead one session of her choice. Coaches build relationships with girls by working alongside them in hands on activities.

Thursdays – 5 pm-8 pm; Jan 26-May 25, 2017

Meet with a small group of girls each week to build positive relationships, have fun, and inspire our girls to be strong, smart, and bold.

Need is for 18 women mentors who can commit to 90% attendance to mentor girls ages 9-14.
