Dollars and sense: Shrewsbury 8th graders attend financial literacy conference

SHREWSBURY —  The Women’s Initiative of the United Way of Central Massachusetts hosted a Dollar $cholar financial literacy conference April 22-24 at Assumption College in Worcester.

Eighth-grade girls from Oak Middle School in Shrewsbury were paired with women mentors from the Worcester area, who taught basics of financial literacy as well as details from their own career paths — with the goal of giving them the tools they need to achieve financial independence as adults.

The Dollar $cholar program, which began under an outside contractor, was taken over by the United Way’s financial literacy committee several years ago.
